…in my opinion.

Book of Revelation – Chapter 2

The letters that John wrote to the seven individual churches apply to all churches of all ages, for these seven churches represent seven stages of church history. Let us see what the Lord had to say.

Ephesus church covers the approximate period of 33 A.D. to 100 A.D. Christ commends that local assembly before scolding them for their sins. Notice that it is not wrong to judge someone when that individual’s doctrine is heretical, or wickedness fills a person’s life. We are to “Try the spirits whether they are of God because many false prophets are gone out into the world.” (1 John 4:1). The church at Ephesus was strong when it started but slipped from its original moorings and was on the way down. Though busy and outwardly sound, it shifted away from its love for Christ. Ephesus lost its first love. They may have been too busy serving and not taking time to fellowship with Jesus. When one is so active that they have no time for Bible study and prayer, they are too busy. Been there and done that! Let us not lose our first love. Remember, repent, and do the first works.

Smyrna church covered 100 A.D. to 312 A.D. when the most significant persecution in all Christianity took place. This church had works of faith that brought great tribulation and material poverty. Yet, they spread the Word of God to the entire Roman Empire. They experienced martyrdom with an estimate of nearly 5 million killed. Death was commonplace. Regardless, the church flourished and grew during the Smyrna period. However, the church developed ritualism or a deliberate Judaizing of Christianity. False professors of religion brought much heartache. We should beware of those who claim to be Christians but deny the deity of Christ (1 John 4:3). Also true of those who mix law and grace in their teachings. Smyrna was experiencing persecution from within and without. When our hour of trial comes, we are not to fear but to keep our eyes on Jesus and the eternal rewards He promised (James 1:12).

Pergamos was the faltering church, extending from 312 A.D. to 606 A.D. Materialism, self-indulgence, and worldliness described the church in Pergamos. You might say that it was adrift or had backslid; a marriage of the church and the world. Of necessity, the believer in Christ is in the world. They must constantly guard against becoming involved in the world’s ungodliness. There appeared to be two false creeds in the church:
(1) the doctrine of Balaam – “Let’s be more relaxed in our loyalties.”
(2) the doctrine of the Nicolaitanes – “Let’s be more restricted in our leadership.” An example is when the ministry or leader says, “I am the head, and you have no choice in the matter,” allowing laymen no voice in the church’s affairs.

Christ’s call is always to the individual believer in these churches. Let’s keep ourselves from immorality and refuse to partake in the loose living around us. Be an overcomer. The white stone represents the changeless purity of Christ.

Thyatira church covers the years of 606 A.D. to 1520 A.D. It started with a commendation from the Lord. She was known for her good works, love, service, faith, patience, and last works, loaded with excellent service and unusual deeds. This church outdid itself. Many scholars believe that this church is still found in the world today until the revived Roman Empire destroys it in Revelation chapters 17 and 18. The church resisted doing what was right and expected. Judgment always comes. The Lord Jesus Christ searches the minds and hearts and will give every one according to their works. Consider that we don’t lose those rewards we have earned (2 John 8). Even here at Thyatira, a remnant remained faithful despite the deterioration of their local church. In verse 28: Christ has promised faithful believers three rewards upon His return to the earth:

  1. Rulership over the nations during the Millennium (chapter 20, verse 4),
  2. Sharing in this glorious time of perfect righteousness resulting from Christ’s enforcement and order (Psalm 2:8,9), and
  3. The abiding presence of the blessed Savior throughout time and eternity as Christ himself, the bright and morning star, reigns (chapter 22, verses 14, 16).

Next, we will continue with the other churches.

Book of Revelation – Chapter 1

The word revelation means unveiling or uncovering. The Roman government exiled the apostle John on a rocky island in the Meditteranean Sea. During his time there, John had a vision given directly by God to write what he saw. John gave details to everything he heard or witnessed. This book is about the unveiling of Jesus Christ and to show His servants things that “must shortly come to pass.” Here we learn that “shortly” means rapid action once there is a beginning. So we enter into a study of signs as we proceed.

Christ has bestowed upon all believers the majesty of a prince and the ministry of a priest. Reading the book of Revelation is a blessing. But there is a blessing to be received for just hearing Revelation read. Don’t put aside this book because it deals with future events. John Phillips, in his commentary, says, “The events it predicts can happen at any moment; not immediate, but imminent.” Let us not forget how short time is and how long eternity lasts.

The number seven (7) will come up again and again. Remember that seven is God’s number of perfection and completeness. Christ holds seven stars, walks among seven candlestands, and instructs John to write what he hears and witnesses to the seven churches in Asia Minor, which are Ephesus, Smyrna, Pergamos, Thyatira, Sardis, Philadelphia, and Laodicea.

We understand Christ as the beginning and ending of all things. He was, is, and always will be. While believers are in this world, they will have tribulation (see John 16:33), but in verse 9, this does not include the Tribulation hour. Kept out of this hour are the saints. It is “the time of Jacob’s trouble.” as stated in Jeremiah 30:7.

Clothed in the garment of an Old Testament high priest, Christ is about to enter into judgment with the world. Swayed by neither pity nor passion, He executes justice that will come swiftly. Bright whiteness speaks of His righteousness. The fire in His eyes reflects the righteous anger concerning the sins of the churches. Christ’s feet picture judgment and relate to the events when He returns to earth.

The seven stars are the seven messengers to the seven churches. Christ “has complete control over all forces, known and unknown, natural and supernatural, seen and unseen, that shape the destinies of men.” (John Phillips commentary). The two-edged sword is the Word of God.

Hades, Sheol, and Hell – what are they?
Sheol
(an Old Testament term) and Hades (a New Testament term) are the same. Hades was a place where all humans’ souls and spirits went until the cross of Christ. There existed two compartments; one for the wicked and the other (known as Paradise) for the righteous. Paradise is where Christ went upon His death (Acts 2:27, 31). He ministered there to His people and led captivity captive (Ephesians 4:8-10). This act released them to enter the third heaven of 2 Corinthians 12:2. Presently, the comfort side of Hades (Paradise) is empty. Fully occupied is the torment side of Hades. On the White Throne Judgment day, God will open Hades’ torment side as told in Revelation 20:13, when death and hell (or Hades) must deliver up the dead. Judgment awaits the wicked.

Written chronologically, the Book of Revelation presents past (were), present (are), and future (shall be) events. Chapter 1 (past), Chapter 2 and 3 (present), and Chapter 4 through 22 (future).

Now we proceed to the seven churches of chapter 2 and chapter 3.

The End of a Superpower Nation

Two thousand three hundred years ago, a man named Ezekiel was given a prophecy about a future enemy of Israel. The story details would play out on the mountains and plains of that country. In 2022, we are still waiting.

Who are the players in this story?

A mysterious country lies to the uttermost north of Israel called Magog. For us, this is the land of Russia. Many biblical scholars agree. The Lord God Almighty is the author of this prophecy given to the Old Testament prophet, Ezekiel. The details are in chapters 38 and 39 of his book. I would encourage you to read them thoroughly.

An enemy is coming against Israel in the future. When Ezekiel wrote this prophecy, Russia did not exist, but God knew everything beforehand. This enemy will gather forces from other nations to join him to create a vast military task force. The invasion happens sometime in the first year or so of the Tribulation period. The Western leader, known as the Antichrist, will have made a peace treaty agreement with Israel to protect them against any invading force. Israel believes this to be true and experiences peace for the first time in a very long time. Its defenses are down, and times are good in Israel.

In the book of Revelation 9:14, we are told about an angel who carries the 6th trumpet. He is told by God to release the four fallen angels bound in the great river Euphrates. Why is this important? Because these angels quickly gather 200,000,000 troops to invade Israel. The resulting conflict will eventually kill about one-third of mankind (Revelation 9:15). The Russian army, with its allies, will lead this holocaust and position itself against the nation of Israel.

200 million troops

In the writings of Ezekiel, this enemy is mentioned as Gog in the land of Magog. Gog is a word for ruler, which means “the man on top.” This man is a dictator regardless of what he calls himself. Magog means “head” and is the Hebrew word for Rosh. This word should be Russia.

Its leader is a self-confident, arrogant man who is full of pride. He considers himself and his nation to be nearly invincible. But for all his greatness, grandeur, and power as a modern military superpower, none of that will protect him from the vengeance God has planned. After all, God said, “I’m against you.” This is a country whose basic philosophy is atheism. Their political economy rests upon the premise that there is no God. No other government has ever assumed its dominant position of atheism.

Concerning Russia, men in high positions have warned, “You cannot negotiate with them (Russians).” Mr. Churchill said of Russia, “A riddle wrapped in a mystery inside an enigma.” Rube Goldberg, who drew one of those crazy cartoons years ago, called Joe Stalin “The Great Upside-down Philosopher.” That cartoon had a message: “Top is bottom, black is white, far is near, and the day is night. Big is little, high is low, cold is hot, and yes is no.” Sounds unreasonable or insane? This is the basic philosophy of Russia even today.

Russia does not come alone in this invasion. Persia (Iran), Libya, and Beth Togarmah (Turkey) join in their hatred of Israel. Keep in mind that these countries are predominantly Muslim. Other nations mentioned are Gomer (Germany) and Ethiopia. They join Russia for their own reasons. But the primary invader is Russia, which comes from the “uttermost part of the north.”

So why invade such a small country as Israel? God tells us, “I will turn him around, put hooks in his jaws, and drag him and his troops away.” Something grabs Gog’s attention to look at Israel. His hand will be forced to move quickly into the Middle East to plunder the nation of Israel. Neither Russia nor its leader realizes that none of them are coming out of Israel alive.

What “hooks” could be used to draw Russia to the Middle East?

  1. Russia needs a warm-water entrance into the world’s waterways for its navy and shipping. Israel sets on the east side of the Mediterranean Sea.
  2. Oil could be another hook. He who controls the oil controls the world. We all know that oil is essential for the survival of all modern nations. Despite strained relationships between the Arabs and Jews, a great deal of oil goes through the land of Israel via pipelines. When ships can’t go through the Suez Canal, oil is pumped through the pipelines to a port on Israel’s coast.
  3. Then there is the Dead Sea. The mineral deposits there are very significant. An estimated 2 billion tons of potassium chloride (potash) is available. It is a mineral used in fertilizers to sweeten and enrich depleted soils worldwide. In addition, there are deposits of magnesium chloride (24 billion tons), sodium chloride (12 billion tons), and calcium chloride (6 billion tons). The Dead Sea is rich in various minerals, even gold.

Much of these items are being depleted worldwide. Still, they are abundant in Israel, as suggested by Dr. J. Vernon McGee in his study of Ezekiel.

But these are the days of the seven-year peace agreement concocted by the Antichrist. Israel signed that agreement and lowered its defenses, believing that the Antichrist would come to their rescue if invaded. After all, there was a guarantee. However, the false peace is broken with Russia’s invasion, and the Great Tribulation is ushered in.

The Russian army and the many nations with him attack Israel like a storm. It will be sudden, rage violently, spread quickly, and alarm greatly. The invading forces will number 200 million troops. You may remember that the book of Revelation speaks to two instances of a 200 million-man army entering the Middle East. One is at the Battle of Armageddon with armed forces from the Far East (Revelation 16). The other is this situation with Russian troops in Revelation 9:16. Acting out of anger more than military planning, these troops seem driven by demons. There will be much killing, plundering, raping, and severe and extensive damage. The troops swoop in and take whatever they wish. Their quick deployment catches the Antichrist and his alliance off-guard. No one comes to Israel’s defense. A few Western nations question why Russian forces are there and what they are up to. Still, only questions are asked – no military response. This vast army covers the land of Israel like a cloud. But like a storm, it doesn’t continue. Their coalition falls apart as various members of their alliance turn against each other. Clouds spread gloom and fear but ultimately break up, which will be what happens to this vast army of Russia. Is everything Gog wanted slipping through his fingers or being ripped away by a stronger force?

The prophet Ezekiel assures Russia of four things, which they would do to consider:

  1. Their attack will occur before Jesus Christ comes back to set up His millennium kingdom on earth;
  2. Russia’s plans and movements are being observed with the permission and direction of Almighty God;
  3. Russian troops’ presence in Israel will flare God’s anger into a fiery blaze;
  4. God intends to glorify Himself in Gog’s (Russia’s) destruction.

But no one is listening in Moscow or in their military. They have prepared to march to their doom; every last one of them.

As this invasion sweeps the Middle East and especially Israel, all types of calamities befall the invading forces in God’s unchanging justice. Every part of creation shall bear its share of this judgment on Russia as if in a convulsion (a violent upheaval) of the whole framework of nature itself. The different segments of GOd’s judgment are happening simultaneously. There is no advanced military prepared for such an onslaught that God is about to release. Its magnitude is tremendous.

  1. First, there will be a great earthquake. Mountain sides crumble, resulting in landslides that block valleys, cutting off routes for troops to advance or retreat.
  2. Second, every man’s weapon, knife or gun, will be used against his brother-in-arms (comrades). Many deep-seated quarrels that have existed for over 14 centuries will flare up among the troops. This strife starts a furious in-fighting with thousands dead.
  3. Third, God sends an overflowing or torrential rain (think downpour) to stop the troops in the mud. This rain lasts long enough to accomplish what God has in mind; hours, days, or weeks. Thunder and lightning will streak across the sky everywhere and recurring. All satellite communications with command centers will be disrupted. Being outside of a protective shelter will mean death.
  4. Fourth, hail falls in this rainstorm. This area of the Middle East is no stranger to large hailstones of the size of 1/2 to 1 pound each. Sizable hailstones can damage or kill anything in their strike zone without shelter. They should expect this storm to produce hail of greater weight and hardness.
  5. Finally, pestilences or plagues hound the invading troops. Sickness breaks out and spreads rapidly. The troops begin to scatter and run for their lives. If the earthquake, rain, lightning, hail, or disease doesn’t kill them, they still have to contend with the fire and brimstone (sulfur) that quickly comes next.
Torrential Rain brings movement to a halt!

So we see that Russia has a destiny in the mountains and plains of Israel. Its whole army and the other troops will be destroyed, and none will be left alive.

In preparation for this invasion, Gog (the Russian leader) drafts 5/6 of the country’s population into the armed forces. Only a sixth of its population is left behind. Five-sixths could equal over 120 million Russian troops.

Imagine looking at the troops getting ready to ship out. There would be experienced soldiers, inexperienced youth, elderly men still able to march and serve, and many female soldiers. Gill’s Exposition of the Entire Bible emphasizes this picture. With Russia eventually out of the way as a dominant world superpower, an enormous geopolitical vacuum will be created. The Antichrist will use this opportunity to grab more power, and God will allow this to happen. Whatever God does is right. His glory is shown in judgment. His grace is known in redemption.

You might ask, “Why will God destroy Russia?” He does so because Russia and her hordes came up against His people of Israel. They came like a cloud over the land. Russia’s destruction will testify to the world’s unbelieving nations that God does exist and that His judgment is faithful and just. “What is God going to do?” He is going to destroy Russia to the very last man. “Do you mean God will actually do such a thing?” Indeed, He will.

What happens next when the smoke clears, the rain ends, and the clouds part? The weapons of the Russian forces will be left in the fields, probably abandoned as they try to flee God’s wrath of sickness, fear, weather, fatigue, etc. Next, God will invite all the hungry birds of the air to feast on the dead bodies of the soldiers. There will be no regard for rank or prestige among the dead. Even the wild beasts will join in this feast. These weapons will be burned as firewood by the poorest of Israel. This burning process will take 7-years to complete. Also, a cleansing of the land of Israel will take place as a testimony that God was their safety and defense and not the Antichrist.

As a final assault, God will send a fire on Magog (Russia’s homeland, where 1/6 of her population resides) and among those who dwell securely (carelessly) in the coastlands. Russia is somewhat unique and guilty of more anti-Semitism than any other nation. There is very little fear of God anywhere as you look around today. In time, God will judge, and when He does, there will be respect and reverence for God in this world.

Finally, the dead bodies must be dealt with. The number is staggering, with at least 200,000,000 bodies or more. Russian forces are going to be buried in Israel. Though the exact location is disputed, the Scriptures tell us that they will be buried in a valley east of the Dead Sea. This massive grave is possibly near the town of Dhiban in Jordan. The site will be referred to as Travelers’ Valley, perhaps the Valley of Hamon-Gog, or simply as The Multitude of Gog. As you can imagine, this will be a challenging and gruesome task. Many men will be hired to bury the dead. The initial gathering and burial process will take about 7-months. After this initial stage, the gravediggers will scour the land of Israel for any remains or bone fragments. A sign or flag will be used to identify the fragment’s location. Only the burial team will be authorized to pick up those fragments and take them to the Vally of Hamon-Gog for interment.

Lessons we can learn from this story:

  1. Sin is an enemy that every man should strive against.
  2. God loves His people of Israel and will protect them in His own way and timing.
  3. God sees all that we do and permits us to make free-will decisions. Sometimes those decisions are good and sometimes bad.
  4. God holds final judgment in His hands. Let’s not be an enemy of God as Gog and Magog are.

The Book of Revelation – personal journey

Am I crazy to read or study a book of prophecy, judgment, warnings, and hope? More people today have questions about the future with all that is going on world-wide. Many scholars have spent a lifetime pursuing an understanding of the Word of God. Yet, the God of the universe has given His word that all will occur as He has said. Revelation has much to say about the coming days for this world. So if you are of a mind, please join me in a journey into a future that you may never have imagined or thought possible. Let us look at the Book of the Revelation of Jesus Christ.

What follows comes from a Pre-Tribulation point-of-view, an explanation provided later. Much of the narrative comes from reading a detailed analysis and discussion by Dr. Jack Van Impe in his book titled Revelation Revealed – verse by verse. See all his work at www.JVIM.com. Another source is the commentary Exploring Revelation by John Phillips, available at various book outlets. This journey will be in segments by chapter. I highly recommend both resources.

There are three main views on when the Rapture of the Church will occur:
(1) Pre-Tribulation (the rapture occurring before the tribulation),
(2) Mid-Tribulation (it occurs somewhere at the mid-point of the tribulation), and
(3) Post-Tribulation (occurring at the end of the tribulation).

So what is the rapture anyway? The biblical passage in
1 Thessalonians 4:13-18 states that all believers in Jesus Christ, living or dead, will meet the Lord Jesus in the air and be with Him forever and ever. Then in 1 Thessalonians 5:9, the apostle Paul writes, “For God did not appoint us (believers) to suffer wrath but to receive salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ.”

Also, Christ promised in Revelation 3:10 to keep believers from the hour of trial coming upon the earth. What is coming is not for them, but it is the time for Jacob’s trouble. Christ promises to keep believers from the trials in this time known as the Tribulation. A literal and consistent interpretation of the Bible lends itself to the pre-tribulation position as the most biblically-based view.

You can also find clear explanation to your biblical questions on www.gotquestions.org.

I plan to submit another posting each week until we conclude. Next, Book of Revelation – Chapter 1

Vanished

What do I mean by “vanish”? The term’s meaning is to “disappear suddenly and completely.” Most of us have said or heard the phrase like “vanished into thin air”. But why write about it? Doesn’t vanishing bring to mind scary thoughts and for some folks tragic circumstances? Of course, it does for some.

But the day that I’m referring to will occur sometime very soon across the face of the earth. Family members, friends, neighbors, co-workers will be there one moment and gone in the next. Do not be surprised or deceived by false explanations of alien spacecrafts taking problem-makers away or out-right denials that the vanishings even happened. If this event occurs before your eyes or you hear about it briefly on the national news, that event is known as The Rapture of the Church.

The Rapture (this snatching away) will occur without any advanced notice to the general population. Believers in the Christ will be looking for it to occur, but will not know when. Christ comes to remove His Church from the earth to be at home with Him in heaven. This change will happen in the “twinkling of an eye” or as someone has estimated as eleven one-hundredths of a second (0.11 second). In that moment, the dead in Christ will rise first being transformed perishable (being dead) to imperishable. The body’s condition doesn’t matter whether buried six feet under, or buried at sea, or cremated, or never found. I have parents and grandparents who are waiting in death for this trumpet call of Christ as well as my wife’s parents and grandparents whose lives were wonderful examples of faithfulness in their lives and relationships with others.

No true believer in Christ will miss out on this event; not even the Christian who is in sin – though they may miss out on some of the rewards that follow. Then we who are alive will be caught up with them and changed from mortal to immortal. May I refer you to I Thessalonians 4:13-17 in the Bible.
